‘My work explores the role of the unconscious in image making – it is a poetic means to document fluid notions of place, memory and experience. The paintings, which always refer to landscape, are invitations to meditate on images which are often hard to define as they float between abstraction and representation. I like to use a variety of materials in an experimental process of layering. Marks and motifs which emerge from the paint are obliterated, manipulated, and remade as I try to achieve a formal ‘rightness’. The heavily textured surfaces give these psychic landscapes a concentrated presence and I often feel as if a finished piece has been retrieved rather than created.’
